Up On the Housetop

This is a song that was written for Nellie McClung, a strong woman who fought hard for the rights of women and children. It’s a traditional English folk song, and it tells the story of a girl whose doll comes to life. She wants to play with her doll, but she doesn’t want to hurt it. So she gives it what she thinks is a goodnight kiss, but her doll has been alive all along.

Up On The Housetop

Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop yeah, yeah
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop click, click, click
Up on the housetop reindeer pause
Out jumps good ol’ Santa Claus
Down through the chimney with lots of toys
All for the little ones’ Christmas joys
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop yeah, yeah
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop click, click, click
First comes the stocking of little Nell
Oh dear Santa fill it well
Give her a dolly that laughs and cries
One that can open and shut its eyes
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop yeah, yeah
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop click, click, click
Look in the stocking of little Bill
Oh just see what a glorious fill
Here is a hammer and lots of tacks
A whistle and a ball and a whip that cracks
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop yeah, yeah
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop
I’m talking ’bout the
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen
Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen
Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen
Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen
Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Ho ho ho, who wouldn’t go
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop yeah yeah
Up on the housetop
Up on the housetop, click, click, click (ah)

The fact that the nursery rhyme “Up on the housetop” was written for a child who is out of sight should not take away from its importance. Even though it has been said that its original purpose was to teach children about fire safety, there are many other things that the rhyme teaches us about childcare and parenting.
