There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd to swallow a bird!

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;
Fancy that! She swallowed a cat!

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;
What a hog, to swallow a dog!

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a goat;
She just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!

She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cow;
I don’t know how she swallowed a cow!

She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’s dead
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse;

…She’s dead, of course!

This is still a very fun read, but I am fairly certain they’ve changed the story since I was a kid… It used to go “I don’t know why she swallowed that fly, perhaps she’ll die.” and now it goes “I don’t know why she swallowed that fly, she won’t say why.” Not quite as fun as the original.

Nice rendition of an old story. I like how they changed the text from original “I guess she’ll die” to “she won’t say why” Great for children up to 9. Older children can act out the text. Especially wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her. I added that line each time we reviewed what she had eaten.

LOVE-LOVE-LOVE Lucille Colandro ” There was An Old Lady…” Collection-Series.

(And as you can see from my reviews, I am on my way to collecting them ALL!!!)

Children — from preschool through elementary — ( on up ) love these books too! The rhythm & rhyme adventures truly encourages my readers to read … And I must say … these books engage and fill my “struggling-readers” with pride!
